Abby
Breed: German Shepherd cross
Diagnosed with: MAST CELL TUMOURS
Age: 8
Abby developed a cancer called mastocytoma. She received radiation therapy at the Western Veterinary Cancer Centre to control this frequently aggressive cancer.
"Abby joined our lives on March 13, 2005 and has made every day since then more enjoyable for all of us. She is there to greet us when we come home every day with her tail wagging. She sleeps on my bed every night with me, and cuddles up to me as close as she can, and I put my arm around her and fall sound asleep and she stays there with me all night. She loves to go for car rides with me, and adores going to the dog park. She is my copilot in the car and my copilot in life. She is only 8 years old and is so deserving of all good things in life given her rough start. I have had several dogs and I love dogs, but she is the best dog I have ever known. She is my very best friend and companion."

Alfred
Breed: Cat
Alfred had lymphoma, a cancer that came very quickly and wore out his bowels, colon, liver and intestines. During his last 7 weeks, I syringe fed Alfred food and water so that he would enjoy his last few weeks to the fullest.
When Alfred was strong enough for chemo, he had two sessions that made him spry and much better for a few days afterwards. Alfred and I spent those weeks enjoying quality time together. He left for Rainbow Bridge on Easter Sunday and is now enjoying running free with vim and vigor, eating as much wet food, tuna and olives as he can!
He lives on in me with everything I do, as pals and buddies never stray far. Alfred is never far from my heart. I celebrate Alfred's life by lighting a candle in his color and remember the beautiful memories and cherish the happy, exciting, caring, supportive and, inspirational times he gave me. -Deb

Amy
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 4
In August of 2005, A.C.T.S.S gave us a subsidy to assist in the treatment of lymphoma for our border collie cross Amy. Amy was just shy of her third birthday when she was diagnosed with lymphoma. We, along with Amy's litter-mate Indi, were devastated. We couldn't imagine life without Amy--she was clever, mischievous, loving and loyal.
Thanks to A.C.T.S.S though, we were able to go ahead with chemotherapy for Amy and by Christmas she had completed a 25 week chemotherapy protocol and was happily in remission. In early April, Amy's cancer came back. We opted to go ahead with another 25 weeks of treatment, but the cancer proved to be more persistent the second time around and we had a really hard time keeping Amy in remission. We worked with out veterinary team at Mill Creek Animal Hospital and with our oncologist in Calgary to come up with the best course of action for Amy, but found that the cancer seemed to be one step ahead every time.
We spent the summer with Amy, and her brother Indi, on a 7-week road trip across Canada--we camped every night, hiked until our feet hurt and walked along every beach we found. It was the greatest summer of our lives, and we are so happy we had our precious Amy with us. By the fall, Amy fell apart pretty quickly. The cancer became very aggressive, sapped her of her energy and appetite and invaded her blood stream. One morning we woke up and just knew it was time to say goodbye to Amy. On October 13, we brought Amy into Mill Creek Animal Hospital where she had been receiving treatment for the past fifteen months and said goodbye.
We miss Amy everyday. We miss her so much it aches. One of the things that makes her absence easier, is knowing that we did everything we could for Amy and made every extra day she had with us worthwhile. Had we not gone ahead with the chemotherapy, Amy would have only had 4-6 weeks. Instead she had 15 months. I think Amy would agree in saying that the past 15 months were jam packed with playtime at the park, treats, runs in the river valleys and a ton of snuggling and belly scratches.
We would like to thank A.C.T.S.S for their contribution towards Amy's chemotherapy--the last 15 months with her were priceless and we will never be able to thank you enough for the role you played in making them possible.
All the best,
Erin, Andrew & Indi

Ariel
Breed: N/A
Diagnosed with: COLON CANCER
Age: 11
In the summer of 2001, Ariel's owner Arlene learned that Ariel had a malignant tumor of her colon. An expensive specialized surgery was required to remove this aggressive tumor from her abdomen.
Arlene applied for subsidization of this surgery from ACTSS and Ariel received her life saving therapy from board certified veterinary surgeons. She recovered quickly and soon was home playing.
April 16, 2002 update by Arlene: "Ariel is doing just great since she had her surgery for her colon cancer in July 2001. She was just in to visit her veterinarian who said that things are looking great, no sign of any cancer at all! She is out enjoying the spring weather with Tanasha, running and playing ball again. It's great to see that at the age of 11 she is able to enjoy a great life still.Tanasha and I would like to thank everyone again that gave her back to us. You guys are just great!! Thank you ACTSS!"

Bailey
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Age: 9
Bailey is a nine year old Australian Shepherd. Bailey originally came to his owners at the age of 2 years from the SPCA. In November 2003 he developed Lymphoma, cancer of his lymph nodes, one of the most common cancers to occur in dogs and cats. Chemotherapy usually gives at least 1 year of remission to this disease.
ACTSS subsidized Bailey's chemotherapy and he did well until May 2004 when he lost his battle to cancer. "He had an impact on a lot of people that knew him. When I informed friends and neighbors of his passing, there were many tears from them as well. He was a very special dog, we miss him very much, and he will be in our hearts forever. Thank you so much for your support. The treatment did make a difference to him and to us and we appreciate it very much."

Bailey
Breed: Cat
Diagnosed with: MAMMARY CANCER IN CATS
Bailey was diagnosed with mammary adenocarcimona in April 2007. A few months later, she went in for surgery which we thought would cure the problem. However, in March 2008, we learned that Bailey's cancer had returned and was spreading to her lymphatic nodes. At this time, we were told that Bailey's life expectancy was roughly twelve months.
It was after this diagnosis that we made the decision to consult Western Veterinary Specialists in Calgary for more information on chemotherapy options. After this consultation, we felt very positive about the likelihood of chemotherapy proving to be beneficial in Bailey's case and we were also confident that Bailey's quality of life would not be severely compromised as the result of treatment.
As of September 2008, Bailey has just finished her final chemotherapy treatment and she has experienced minimal side effects. Dr. Glenna Mauldin, the veterinary oncologist who supervised Bailey's treatment, couldn't be happier when it comes to Bailey's response to her treatments. All tests and x-rays have come back clear and we are hopeful that Bailey's cancer remains in remission.

Bandit
Breed: N/A
Age: 12
Thank you for the donation to help paying for Bandit's cancer therapy. There is no way I can express my gratitude in words, and "thank you" seem so generic, but please know that I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Unfortunately my precious Bandit passed away on 31 January 2007. Not directly because of the cancer though, thanks to your help.
When Bandit was in Saskatoon, a Vascular Access Port ( catheter) was "planted" in his neck to make the administering of daily aesthetic easier on him. I chose to keep this port in, just in case he ever needed to get chemotherapy, for which the port could also be used. Unfortunately the port got inflamed, the bacteria spread to his lungs and he got pneumonia. The bacteria did not respond to the antibiotics he was given. He got worse and was starting to suffer, so he was euthanized.
Bandit meant the world to me, and there is nothing I would NOT have done to make his treatment possible to save him and to give him quality of life. Your assistance was a huge stone rolled out of my way in a time of need. He was doing so well after his cancer treatment. People could not believe that he was already 12 years old, because he was so joyful and playful. If it wasn't for the complications with the port, I'm sure he would have lived a happy and healthy life for quite a few more years.
Thank you for the cause you support, and for recognizing that people's pets are not "just a dog" or "just a cat", but important parts of their lives. Our pets ask so little and give so much, they deserve every bit of loyalty and care that we can give them. Here are some pictures. I added the one of him running to show you how active he was with that leg you helped me save (the front right leg). Another picture shows the bold areas in the area that was radiated. One can also see his many lipoma lumps on this picture, and the weight he gained while he was in Saskatoon for his treatment. We were worried that he may lose weight afterwards, so he got a lot of rice and potato with his food. Which he gobbled up, of course.
Sincerely, Luvette

Beavis
Breed: Labrador
Age: 7
We were doubly blessed, first of all for having Beavis as a pet and secondly for having that time extended through assistance from the ACTSS. Beavis was 6-7 year old neutered male Labrador-Cross who was a wonderful pet Beavis, a companion animal with Alzheimer's patients and he helped teach children about canine aggression. His attitude towards life was so infectious. He made going for walks exciting, even at -30C. He loved to swim and play tug and be with his people. He loved to snuggle at night and found his way onto the bed whenever he could.
Beavis developed lymphoma when he was 6 years old. While his cancer was devastating to us we were so glad that we had time to enjoy his life and spend as much time as possible with him. Right up until the end he played and loved as only he could. Our last memories of our beautiful boy will be walking in the snow-covered woods, watching him sniff out rabbit trails and coming back to play tug. Thank you ACTSS for giving us this extra time with our boy.

Brandy M
Breed: American Bulldog/Rottweiler
Diagnosed with: OSTEOSARCOMA OF THE JAW
Age: 10
Brandy was only 9 years old when her mom Melodie noticed that she was having some pain in her jaw. A trip to the veterinarian revealed an infected tooth and Brandy had a procedure to remove the tooth. Unfortunately during the dentistry, the veterinarian found bone damage around the tooth and an xray revealed that a cancer had begun. A biopsy confirmed the fears of bone cancer and Brandy had surgery to remove one-half of her lower jaw. It gave Melodie hope to learn that bone cancer of the jaw had a better prognosis than bone cancer of a leg. Melodie worked very hard with Brandy in the weeks and months following the surgery. She helped Brandy learn how to eat again and then they went through chemotherapy experience together. Melodie was always there to nurse Brandy back to health.
For any hope, big or small, it's a hope worthwhile because our pets should be classified as family members and not just dogs or cats for they never judge you, they give you unconditional love forever.

Buddy
Breed: Golden Retriever
Diagnosed with: MOUTH CANCER
Buddy's Cancer Story -- In the winter of 2005, we began to notice bleeding from Buddy's mouth. At first we thought it was caused by a simple bitten tongue or cheek- however, the bleeding did not stop. We took him to the vet, who told us that the bleeding was from a tumour on his tongue.
The tumour had grown so that he had consistently bitten down on it. After some tests the vet had some very bad news for us: Buddy's tumour was a malignant cancer. Fortunately after examination of his lymph nodes and x-rays of his internal organs, we found that the cancer had not yet spread. After much exploration of our options, we decided that the best course of action was radiation therapy. This therapy was only available in Saskatoon, but we were willing to brave the twelve-hour drive there and back if it meant a chance for Buddy.
The vet team in Saskatoon were very nice, and it was they that first told us of ACTSS. Buddy's four-week radiation program was very expensive; not only that but he requires routine blood tests and medication as part of his aftercare. Each routine check-up's cost adds to the financial burden. WE are willing to shoulder this burden for the sake of our best friend, but the ACTSS's subsidy provides some much needed assistance

Charlie
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Diagnosed with: FIBROSARCOMA
Age: 13
"Charlie was under a year old when I found him sitting sadly in a kennel at the Calgary city pound - it was his third visit. They said he'd been badly treated and had been through several homes. That was 12 years ago, he came home with me - and he has enriched every day of my life ever since. Then in the fall of 2009 - a frightening discovery. A lump had started to grow in his pelvic area. At first it seemed to be inoperable. In early March, we had a consult with Dr. Dave at Western Veterinary Cancer Centre... and the next day he operated to remove the mass. Biopsy results determined it was a fibrosarcoma. Then we had another consult with oncologist Dr. Mauldin who advised the mass would re-grow locally - and fast. My heart broke at the thought of losing Charlie, he would run into trouble soon without treatment, but with radiation he had a good prognosis. I could not imagine not helping him... however, the cost of radiation therapy was a major concern. I was told about ACTSS and hoped they might help. They did! Charlie has now completed his 21st treatment and is doing well. We are enjoying walks together in the summer sun, and he obviously feels that he has a new lease of life! I am optimistic. Every day with him now is a gift and treasured. I am so immensely grateful to this wonderful organization for their contribution. Thank you to everyone at ACTSS from the bottom of our hearts."

Cino
Diagnosed with: LIPOSARCOMA
We had been on vacation for Christmas and on the way home had noticed that Cino was not himself. Our first indication that Cino was in difficulty was when we noticed that he was having trouble getting out of the van. He had also started squatting in stead of lifting his leg to urinate. His appetite had also waned so we tried feeding him his favorite foods to no avail. He seemed to be experiencing his front paws on my shoulders to dance with me.
We had at first put his behavior down to his being cramped up in the van on the drive back from Kamloops. We waited to see if his condition improved over night. We discovered the next morning that he was still experiencing discomfort. We took him that afternoon to his doctor Miguele at the Strathmore Veterinary Clinic. He noticed that Cino was swollen in his abdomen area and took w-rays of him. Dr Miguele advised us that Cino had a very advanced tumor and that he had to be in extreme pain. He recommended that it would be kinder for Cino if he would be put to sleep. We could not do that without exhausting all possibilities in an attempt to save his life.
Dr. Miguele recommended that we attempt to get Cino seen by the cancer specialist at the Western Veterinary Specialist Centre. He contacted the centre and arranged for us an emergency appointment for Cino to be examined by Dr Dave Szentinrey the next morning. Cino was examined by the staff who confirmed the diagnosis. They did however offer hope that Cino's condition was operable and that he stood a good chance of survival with the proper treatment. Cino was operated on at the clinic and a massive tumor was removed from his abdomen along with one of his kidneys. The medical staff was very optimistic about Cino's prognosis.
After sending a sample of the tumor the results were very unexpected. Tests on the tumor showed that the growth had some malignancies which would necessitate Cino needing five chemotherapy treatments at $500.00 per treatment and blood work after each. We had just spent $4,000.00 on the surgery for Cino and as we are going into retirement this year were strapped financially to continue spending that kind of money. We applied to ACTSS and were successful in receiving $1,000.00 for two of the treatments for Cino. You cannot imagine the relief this generous gift afforded us. Cino had his first treatment on February 6, 2004 with the only noticeable side affect being an upset stomach. He has now had his second treatment on February 27, 2004 with no apparent side effects.
He has gained back ten of the pounds he lost, recovered his strength and enjoys playing with me as he had before his illness. The least we can hope for is to double the expected life span that had been estimated by the doctor and the most we can hope for is a complete cure. We would like to thank ACTSS for their generous gift. If it had not been for them Cino more than likely would not have celebrated his second birthday March 1, 2004. Cino is very dear to us and completes our family. We are truly thankful that there are organizations such as yours that share the same love of animals as we do.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Cino, Shirley and Len

Coco
Breed: Rottweiler
Diagnosed with: LYMPHOMA
Age: 5
I would like to start off by thanking ACTSS for the subsidization approval for Coco. The two of us have been together since she was 8 weeks old. It is hard to believe 5 years have passed and we still enjoy each others company, every minute of it. A little over 4 months ago I noticed that Coco had developed what appeared to be swollen glands; as it turned out they were swollen lymph nodes. After Coco's biopsies of her lymph nodes came back positive for Cancer, life got different, really fast. We made our way to the Western Veterinary Hospital to visit with Dr. Mauldin; she explained to us that the options; watch Coco fade away over the next 4 weeks or attempt Chemotherapy. So far I had learned that dogs can get cancer and the sooner you detect it the better the chances of survival. Unfortunately for me and Coco... Lymphoma is not curable only treatable. The extent to which the treatment would be effective was anyones guess. All I was promised was the expense attached to the therapy and let me say it is not cheap. Faced with the ultimate decision of putting my best friend down so she does not have to suffer brought tears to my eyes. I think at that moment Coco knew I was struggling; she managed a few whimpers of her own and moved to rub her nose against my leg. We both sat in that tiny room with the Vet's and Technician, me crying and Coco doing her best to let me know it was okay.
So it has been just over six weeks since Coco's first Chemo treatment and she has responded very well. As a matter of fact she was in 100% remission after 36 hours of treatment. I can not tell you the relief I felt when given the news of Coco's speedy recovery. I know this is only temporary; eventually I will have to let my best friend go and give her to God in trust. The thought still brings tears to my eyes but we move forward full of hope for another day as each one is a gift. Coco has always made people smile, she has a gift and uses it every chance she gets. If only we could offer unconditional love to those around us as our dogs do so naturally every moment of their lives. Coco and I have taken up running together, we both love it and make new acquaintances along the way. I must admit that the Oncology team at Western Veterinary Cancer Centre has been fantastic, from our wonderful Technician Joelene to the support staff at the reception desk and everyone in between, thank you for all your help in the past and future!
No matter what hardships lay ahead, no matter how impossible life may seem, faced with the worst of odds, we carry on... together!
Sincerely,

Copper
Breed: N/A
Diagnosed with: PLASMACYTOMA
In January, 2005 Copper began to hold his head funny -- it looked like something was wrong with his neck. Copper's birthday would be April 26 and, as he was born in 1999, I wasn't expecting anything like the eventual diagnosis -- cancer. The diagnosis did not come for a while. After a visit to my local vet, it was unclear what was actually wrong. He appeared to have general stiffness, painful on arising and a fever as well as a reoccurrence of a rash on his stomach that he had in December, 2004.
He was started on antibiotics in January. On February 5 th he had x-rays and was referred to WVSC for surgery. Dr. Fowler found a mass on his spinal cord and removed most of it. The diagnosis of Myeloma was made and he was sent to Saskatoon for radiation from March 3 to 24th. He was taken care of by Dr. Monique Mayer and radiation therapist Erica Collen. He lived off campus with 3rd year vet student, Amanda and she took wonderful care of him. My mom and I picked up Copper on March 24th and bid a tearful good-bye to the wonderful staff. Copper looked funny with hair shaved off in patches all over his back and legs but he rode very calmly in the back of my car all the way back to Calgary where he started chemotherapy.
He had a bad reaction while in Saskatoon to Melphalan but it was determined that if he was carefully monitored, a combination of Melphalan and prednisone was the best. Copper has flourished and is now chasing balls, albeit more carefully, in the park once more. I am amazed that this dog, who in February could not walk more than a block can now be out walking for hours at a time. He is considered to be in remission. For how long, I don't know, but I am told that this cancer reacts well to treatment so I can only hope that I will be able to keep him healthy by monitoring his blood, feeding him well and continuing his medication.
ACTSS has made it possible for me to pay off some of the huge bills that accumulated this year with medication, operations, and radiation. Some say that I was foolish to spend so much on my dog, however, what he gives back to me more than makes up for any amount of money I spent.

Cujo
Breed: N/A
Diagnosed with: OSTEOSARCOMA
Age: 8
Cujo came to us at about the age of 2, having being abandoned by his owner at a home that boards dogs. He had a rough start in life, being jostled from home to home, but that came to an end, the day we met him. Cujo was (and still is) very excited about life. He loves meeting new people, going for walks, watching movies with the family and eating popcorn (sshhhh! don't tell the doctors that!) and he LOVES food in general. Cujo also loves camping, campfires and going in the truck or anything else that involves the family. He even allows Hope (our cat) to snuggle up when no one is looking. Cujo is a great source of joy, love and comfort for my kids and I and he manages to win the affections of everyone he meets. We can honestly say that without Cujo, there would be a void in our life.
At age 8, Cujo was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in his front leg. It was an extremely difficult time for my kids and I (and Cujo) because the limping that Cujo was doing came on suddenly, after a week of camping, and I thought he had pulled a muscle while we were out walking. CANCER was the last thing on our mind! On September 23rd, after many tears and sleepless nights and four days before my daughter's 11th birthday, Cujo went into surgery for amputation of his front leg. On September 26th he had his first chemotherapy treatment and since then has had another one. Doctors told us that dogs do surprisingly well with chemotherapy in that they don't get sick like humans do and Cujo is proving that to be true.
Since his amputation and chemotherapy, Cujo is going for walks and moving faster than he did before. He is lively, energetic, happy and yes, he still loves food! We know that Cujo will not live forever. None of us will, but we know that we have done everything possible and we know that Cujo has been given the best chance at living a full life. Although every circumstance is different, we haven't any regrets with the decision we made.
Thank-you to all of Cujo's loving doctors and nurses at Savannah Animal Clinic, Western Vet Specialists and Millcreek Animal Hospital and to ACTSS organization for your help and devotion and your love.

Update December 2010: Diesel was a beautiful Dalmation owned by Brandy, an amazing owner. Diesel developed lymphoma at the young age of 4 years. Brandy and Diesel traveled through the cancer experience together with Diesel receiving chemotherapy. Diesel did very well but after many months, he eventually lost his battle. Brandy has honoured Diesel's courageous battle through her gift of volunteerism with ACTSS, helping others learn more about pets and cancer and treatment programs that are available.
Thank you Brandy!
July 2008: "Diesel is a 4 year old Dalmation cross. We got him when he was 2 months old from the SPCA. He was such a big baby, always sitting on our laps or taking over our bed and to this day, all grown up he still owns us. It almost seems like we are his pets!
In November, 2007 he was diagnosed with a type of cancer called lymphoma. We caught it at an early stage which gave us hope for a better fight. It has almost been 8 months now with the treatments and although we have some hard days, we have more good days than bad. We just have to take it day by day and pray everything will be okay tomorrow. We are very grateful for all the support and help the Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society has provided our family and I’m sure if Diesel could speak English he would say the same"

Duke
Breed: N/A
Diagnosed with: HEMANGIOPERICYTOMA
In late 2002, my dog (and best friend) Duke was found to have a cancerous lump on his leg. The vet did two-week checks of the lump at first and then a biopsy in February of 2003. On February 7, the surgery was done, and they thought that they had gotten all the cancer. However, in October 2004, the lump came back. I knew it was the cancer returning, and deep down I knew, also, that Duke , my best friend, was going to die from it this time.
All they thought they could do was let him go when the time came, so the only treatment re received was bi-monthly checks of the lump, looking for changes in size, etc. Duke was so full of life they decided to try and remove as much of the lump as possible, hopefully extending his life for another six months or so. Then, the cancer clinic stepped in and decided to try and save his life.
Unfortunately, Duke died on the operating table that night. Duke has brightened each and every day with his outstanding and great attitude. I will forever remember him and how he helped me and hopefully his memory will enable me to maintain care for myself. Duke would have liked that. I would like to thank ACTSS very much for the financial assistance they offered me in such a troubled time.

She wanted me to be able to play and have sisters to have fun with. I went to live on an acreage with my new sisters, Sasha and Meesha. October 2008, I developed a lump on my nose. Dr. Jennifer Stelfox did a biopsy and found it to be a fibrosarcoma and sent me to Dr. Dave Szentimrey at the Western Veterinary Cancer Centre in Calgary. I had the tumor and half of my upper jaw removed. Everything went well and I was back playing and exploring on the acreage until February 2010 when the lump returned. Again, Dr. Szentimrey did surgery and Dr. Neil Mulden arranged 21 radiation treatments in Calgary. I am now in the recovery phase. I am so thankful for everyone who helped me, Dr. Stelfox, Dr. Szentimrey, Dr. Mulden, the staff at the WVSC and to ACTSS for the help and support, but especially to my mom and dad.
THEY SAY THAT THEY ARE THE LUCKY ONES TO HAVE ME IN THEIR LIVES BUT I THINK THAT I'M THE LUCKY ONE!

Ernie
Breed: Greyhound
Diagnosed with: LEIOMYSARCOMA
Age: 6
Ernie is a 6 and a half year old brindle greyhound who has been living with our family for the past 3 years. Our concern for Ernie's health started on February 19, 2004 with our oldest daughter finding a large lump in his lower jar. The diagnosis turned out to be leiomyosarcoma a fast growing localized cancer that is slow to spread to the rest of the body. The prognosis was dependent on resectability. Within 8 weeks of initial tumor discovery, Ernie had stopped eating and would need either surgery or he would have to be put down.
A biopsy was done on February 23, and on February 28 the veterinarian called with the results and recommended surgery along with a good prognosis. Our family was in no position to commit the financial resources required by the surgery so on February 29 we inquired about any possible programs for such situations. On March 8, Leah called back to indicate that there is a cancer society in Spruce Grove, AB that could provide financial assistance with proper qualifications.
Already feeling overwhelmed and sensing that Ernie was quickly running out of time due to the rapid growth of the tumor we resigned ourselves to palliative care to make his final days as comfortable as possible. On March 22 we happened to read a very interesting article on greyhounds written by Mark Abrams and we called him to get his perspective on our situation. He immediately directed us to the West Veterinary Specialist Center (WVSC) in Calgary who assisted us in submitting the necessary forms for the Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization (ACTS) subsidy on March 26.
Working with both Dr. Strick, Ernie's vet, and Mark Abrams we managed to get onto the agenda of the ACTSS committee's next meeting to review Ernie's application. Apparently, this committee only meets every six months and they approved Ernie's application on March 31. That same morning Ernie had chest X-rays and began IV re-hydration with an examination by surgeon Dr. Dave Szentimrey as he was admitted to WVSC for the surgery. On April 1, ACTSS called to confirm that Ernie's surgery would be partially subsidized. In addition, we learned that greyhound pet owners, Leslie and Glynis Hogle, helped raise additional funds for Ernie's surgery which took place shortly after his admission into the clinic.
Ernie returned home 4 days after his operation. Except for the adjustment that he has to make while eating now that he does not have 2/3 of his lower jaw, he has resettled back home nicely. He has regained his appetite and has stepped right back into his regular routine. His tongue does hang down and is more visible now which gives him an endearing "Harvey the Hound" look like the famous Calgary Flames mascot. Obviously, Ernie has been blessed with a group of very caring and capable people all mentioned above who were able to bring resources together in a timely manner. On behalf of our family, thank you for your kindness and generosity in keeping Ernie with his family.
Once again, thank you,
Maretta, Sharla, Emily, & Danny

Diagnosed with: SOFT TISSUE SARCOMA
Age: adult
Henry Ford said "You can do anything if you have enthusiasm", these are words that Kamo lives by everyday. With a wiggle of his bum and a huge smile on his face, he wakes up in the morning with an "everyday is a party" attitude. One look into those dark brown eyes after he was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in his neck, and I knew that I would do everything possible to help him. After a very complicated surgery to remove the huge mass that was compressing his spinal cord, Kamo underwent 7 weeks of radiation as well as several treatments of chemotherapy. Throughout everything he maintained his exceptional attitude, good spirit and daily swims in the lake. We owe so much to Dr Fowler for the surgery and Dr. Neal Mauldin and Dr. Glenna Mauldin for Kamo's radiation and chemotherapy treatments. The doctors and technologists at the Cancer Center in Calgary are amazing and made this terrible experience a lot more bearable. I am indebted to them for the exceptional care they gave him. Thank you so much to all the dedicated volunteers that make the ACTSS a reality. We are forever grateful!

Age: 9
In January 2003 Kayla's owners Cheryl and Everett noticed that Kayla wasn't feeling well. A trip to the vets revealed enlarged lymph nodes and tests revealed that Kayla had a cancer of the lymph nodes called Lymphoma. Kayla began chemotherapy immediately and her lymph nodes soon returned to normal size. Kayla was receiving treatment every one to two weeks for 19 weeks and went into complete remission.
No one could tell that she ever was sick. She was the same bouncy playful 9 year old Shih Tzu she was before the cancer developed. Kayla stayed in remission for 1 1/2 years, and then the cancer returned. Kayla received a second course of chemotherapy and did very well until January 2005 when she finally lost her battle with cancer. She was a wonderful dog and is greatly missed by her family and all the people who cared for her.

Keeley
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 10
No words can express the gratefulness that I feel for the wonderful subsidy Keeley and I received through ACTSS. It's a wonderful charity. Here is our continuing saga.
Keeley was first diagnosed with Lymphoma in March 2006. She was an active happy go lucky 10 yr old Border Collie/Sheltie cross. Who was a part time companion to my parents, sisters, brother in-laws, nieces and nephew. Everywhere I went Keeley was by my side. Winter 2006 is when I first realized something was wrong, accidents in the house and weight loss which I just thought was because I switched her over to a senior dog food.
Shock and utter horror is how I felt. Crushed! Cancer--how could I lose my Keeley? She is my companion, child, friend, family. Devastated and lost is how I felt while waiting for the initial testing Keeley had to endure. I owe a lot to my family who emotionally supported us throughout this time. Biopsies, fine needle aspirations, ultrasounds and finally a trip to see an oncologist, Dr. Neal Mauldin who told me that Keeley's cancer is highly treatable through Chemotherapy. 85% chance of remission average 18-24 months. If we did not treat she would have 30-60 days. There was no doubt in my mind that we would proceed with her treatment. I was not ready to lose her.
After 16 chemo treatments which lasted over 6 months Keeley was in remission for almost 26 months. Side effects were minimal; Keeley handled the treatments surprisingly well. Wow!! I couldn't imagine the last 2 years without her. She is a spunky 12 yr old now. A little more gray hair but if it wasn't for that you would not be able to tell she was in her senior years. She still chases balls and magpies with an incredible amount of speed.
April 30th 2008, Keeley came out of remission. I did know it would not last forever. Another trip where I found out that Keeley's chances of remission again were the same as when she was first diagnosed. Here we go again. There was no question in my mind that we would battle this again. Treatments started that day. It is now September 2008 and Keeley is still having treatments until the end of October.
Once again she is in remission. Let's hope it lasts forever. I love her with all my heart. Some people do not understand the bond that forms between you and an animal. It is veterinarians, their teams and charities like ACTSS where there is a never ending supply of caring and understanding individuals. Please continue the great work you do.
Yours Sincerely, Karen and Keeley

Kronos
Breed: N/A
I can not stress the importance of an organization like the Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society (ACTSS). I know first hand the postive impact on families this organization has. When our dog Kronos was diagnosed with Lymphosarcoma in June 2004 we were devastated. This was not something we were prepared for, emotionally or financially.
ACTSS provides a wealth of information on their website. Reading the stories of other families in the same situation was invaluable. Their stories gave us strength and hope. Without the financial assistance ACTSS provided I do not believe we could have continued the chemotherapy treatments. Not only do they require a significant devotion of time, but they can also be very costly. Kronos is now well into his chemotherapy and is doing very well.
Not a day goes by that we do not appreciate the additional time we have with Kronos. Without treating his cancer we would have lost him months ago. The additional time is providing us with memories that will last a lifetime. We will always be comforted knowing that we did the best we could for him and will have no regrets. Without assistance from the ACTSS I do not believe we could make that assertion. The ACTSS is the only organization of its kind and fills a large void. Please support the ACTSS. I know when our family is in a position to do so we will.
Sincerely,
Krono's family

Diagnosed with: LYMPHOMA
Age: 6
Kylie is our six year old lab and pit mix that developed lymphoma in the last part of November 2009, and with the gracious and caring help of ACTSS we began her chemotherapy treatment. My husband and I adopted Kylie from the Humane Society when she was only two months old as she had been overlooked by everyone because she had mange. My husband and I fell in love with her and it was never a second thought about treating her mange and taking her home. She has been a part of our family ever since and will always remain a part of our family no matter what happens. What ACTSS gives to those who love their "pets", or what I prefer to call them, members of the family, is amazing. This organization not only provides financial support but learning tools and most importantly, caring and a deep sense of understanding for what you are going through. I will be forever grateful to them for what they have done and will strive to pass their beautiful sense of giving along in my own life.
Kylie's treatment was looking very promising until she came out of remission on week eight of her chemotherapy treatment. We have switched her protocol in hopes that she may do better on something different, and although I never give up hope, we are truly making every moment count with her as the future for her is very uncertain.

Age: 4
The middle of April 201 was a difficult time. It was when my beautiful Marina was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I was in shock. How could my 4 year old baby be given a death sentence? Without treatment her time line was only 4-6 weeks. I could not wrap my mind around this. I was referred to Dr. Glenna Mauldin at the Western Veterinary Specialist Centre. I did not want Marina to suffer and be sick for her remaining time just so I could have her with me. Dr. Mauldin assured me that the animals do very well with the chemotherapy and have few if any side affects, and the ones they do have are mild. So then the question came about cost. These treatments are not cheap. I was informed about ACTSS and I applied. Treatment was started that very day and within 36 hours Marina was her normal happy self. She started playing again and eating. Now we are several weeks into her treatment and Marina is doing great! She is in a stable remission and has gained her weight back. Her worst days during treatment have been only a little quieter than her normal happy days. I do realize that Marina will eventually succumb to her cancer but I am so glad I decided to treat her. I enjoy and treasure every day I have with her. From the bottom of my heart I thank the staff at the Western Veterinary Specialist Centre, and the board of ACTSS for the subsidy. I'm sure Marina thanks you as well!

Max developed bone cancer (osteosarcoma) at the age of 6 years. This large Malamute cross needed chemotherapy to keep the cancer from spreading elsewhere in his body. Osteosarcoma is a common cancer that primarily strikes large breed dogs and there is no cure. However, amputation of the leg and chemotherapy allows 50% of all treated dogs to live an additional 6-12 months of excellent quality life. 25% of dogs can live an additional 2 years after treatment.
This is very valuable time between the owners and their pet. Preserving the human/animal bond is a tremendous gift that ACTSS can offer pet and their pets with cancer. Max lived an additional six months after treatment and passed away from his cancer in November, 2002.

Maxine
Breed: Retrevier
Diagnosed with: OSTEOSARCOMA
Maxine is an intelligent, friendly, compassionate and lovable dog who is different from my other two golden retrievers. Maxine is my third golden retriever. Maxwell and Sam are my previous golden retrievers who are remembered as kind, gentle-hearted, trusting, handsome and sometimes stubborn pet companions. However Maxine has out shone them with her dedicated loyalty and her regard for my safety.
At times Maxine is faced with a problem regarding her ball and, of course, it is easy to expect me to solve it; however, being a teacher I usually respond with, "Solve your problem-you can do it." To my satisfaction and to her glee she does exactly that - finds the solution. Maxine does welcome the opportunity to be challenged intellectually and she likes being mentally alert to all activities in the home and community. Being outside and being exercised are a must in our home. There are always places to go and smells to be smelled and new friends to meet both animal and human.
Maxine has a fairly large command of the English language for a dog. She does listen to what I say and to the words of others she trusts. Positive comments are made by friends and others how well she responds to the spoken word and she does what she needs to do. Maxine is a loved and very special golden who makes her presence known as she enters the room. She has a vivacious personality that is infectious to those near her. Although Maxine has had her left front leg amputated due to cancer, she has a good life. Hopefully with a good home, lots of love and the proper medical attention her life can continue and will continue forward for some time.

Age: 7
Mika is a big and beautiful Alaskan Malamute, she is coming on 7 years next March. She is the baby and should I say the queen of our house. During August my husband found a squishy lump on her right shoulder; taking her to the vet for her yearly appointment the vet did an aspirate of the lump and the cells were not good. She then had a biopsy done; the results were Mast Cell Tumour (Grade 1).
We were referred to Dr. Nikki Sereda at the Western Vet Specialist Center. She had surgery on September 24th to remove the lump and also a lymph node which was found to have cells in it. Her lumps were upgraded to a grade 2. We decided to do chemotherapy to give her a better chance of it not spreading. She had 6 chemotherapy treatments all together. One every week for three weeks then another three with a week interval in between. Mika had to have a blood test the day before chemotherapy and then chemotherapy which usually took one hour.
Mika knew where she was going and would do her cry, but once she got used to it she loved the doctor and Jamie who gave her the I.V. She became a star as the two of them would "woo woo" as soon as she arrived. Mika is glad that it is over and she is fine and we are hoping for the best. For now we need some rechecks for the next 3 months and then every three after that.
Yours truly, Sheila

We don't want to say goodbye yet, so we have been doing chemotherapy since December 8, 2009. Cancer treatment is very expensive and may only buy us a few weeks or months but we are not ready to give up yet. Maybe we will beat the odds.
Going through cancer treatment with a loved one, whether human or pet, is very difficult and affects the whole family. You always hope there will be the miracle, but no matter what the outcome, we want to do everything we can for them, even if we have to sacrifice to do that. We nurse them, clean up after them, and take time to be with them and most of all, love them.
ACTSS understands our bond with our pets and helps ease the financial burden. With their help, more pets will have treatment and because of that, we will learn more about the treatments for the benefit of future cancer sufferers.

"Thank you so much for your assistance in funding Rascal’s cancer therapy.
In a nutshell, the medical team and treatment in Saskatoon at the Western Canada Vet. Hospital was fantastic, very personal and supportive. Besides the top notch care, he received a lot of love and was not traumatized. His health was thoroughly assessed, including ultrasound, and he was deemed to be a good candidate for radiation treatment of his nasal carcinoma. Each day for 3 weeks; he received a very brief dose of radiation, which did make his nose and mouth sore but was kept under control with medication. We are so glad to have him at 13 years old, and look forward to several more years!
Thank you again, Rascal's Family"

Roen
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 7
Roen is a 7 year old Collie cross. He developed cancer of the lymph nodes this late summer. His owner Heather also owned three other dogs and cats that she rescued as unwanted senior pets. This year because of their advanced ages they all had medical problems that drained Heather's bank account. With Roen's health rapidly deteriorating due to the cancer Heather approached ACTSS and received assistance. Since his chemotherapy started Roen is back to normal, which is super because he's the community sweetheart and loved by all who know him.

Rudy is one of the first pets that ACTSS has subsidized to be treated with radiation therapy at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine's (WCVM) new Pet Cancer Center, opened in 2004. Rudy developed lymphoma, cancer of the lymph nodes. Rudy's mom not only insured that Rudy received the necessary chemotherapy to put his cancer into remission, she then arranged for him to receive half body radiation at WCVM. Half body radiation is likely to keep the cancer in the lymph nodes in remission longer than chemotherapy alone. Rudy and his mom are an amazing team.

Sabre
Breed: N/A
Please forgive the delay in sending this. We wanted to be sure Sabre continued to respond well to his therapy before writing you again. He has indeed continued to be in complete remission and does many a "Happy Dance" (we are sure in honour and gratitude to you all, as well as out of the sheer joy of living exuberantly with his little terrier brothers and Mommy and Daddy, Grandma and Aunties, here in sunny Calgary!)
Again, our profound thanks and assurance that I will certainly send you pictures and "Sabre's Story" when he is closer to completion of his therapy (he is about two-thirds through it now). Please let me know if you would like something sooner. Every moment I spend with our beautiful boy is precious and cherished (there are some who feel an animal's life is relatively worthless but in my soul I know this to be utterly false: the human-animal bond can be just as meaningful as any other.) What Sabie has given to me is priceless. Bless you in your work.

Sabre
Breed: Shepherd
Diagnosed with: LYMPHOSARCOMA
In October 2008 one evening when Sabre's family were down on the floor wrestling with him, they noticed that he had "lumps" in his flank, groin and jaw. A trip to his vet confirmed that Sabre had developed lymphosarcoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes. Sabre was immediately referred to the Calgary Animal and Emergency Centre for chemotherapy by Dr. Victoria Larsen. Chemotherapy went well and Sabre immediately went into remission and has returned to his happy doggie ways.

Sasha
Breed: Rottweiler
Sasha was a Rottweiler German Shepherd cross. We acquired Sasha when she was only 6 months old. At that time she was very thin and scared to death of just about anyone. She immediately took a liking to my oldest son, who at the time was only 8 months old. Once she realized that we were not going to hurt her, she was the most trustworthy and protective dog I have ever owned. We live on an acreage outside of town and I had no fears of letting my kids go outside to play, because I knew that Sasha would keep an eye on them.
In 2001, Sasha was diagnosed with lymposarcoma. At the time of diagnosis she was still quiet healthy, but within a week it was apparent that she was not feeling well. She wasn't eating much, nor was she very active. Within the first couple of chemotherapy treatments she was back to her old self, it was as if nothing was wrong with her. She finished her first round of chemotherapy and seemed as healthy as she had been previously. However that did not last as long as I had hoped. Within a few months the cancer had returned. We started chemotherapy again, but it was not as successful as the first go around, which the veterinarians had explained, would be the case.
In June 2002 we had to have Sasha euthanized. That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It was very hard on me, but harder on my two sons. The oldest that was seven at the time slept with Sasha's collar and leash under his pillow for over a month. We got her body cremated and I believe that has made it a lot easier on the boys, because they know that she will always be with us no matter what.
Although the chemotherapy did not last as long as I hoped and was quiet expensive, I would do it again in a heartbeat. We still have her collar and leash, but it is put up and will never be used for another dog again. Although we did get another dog, Sasha can not and will not ever be replaced, she will always have a special place in our hearts.

"Sasha was one of the dearest of little girls, who loved her family greatly and they in turn loved her. She was brave and fun and mischievous. She developed lymphoma far too early in life, but she faced her challenges with gusto and she was a favourite of all the vet clinic staff. She underwent chemotherapy with the assistance of some yummy snacks and the constant companionship of her sister Natasha. She did eventually lose her battle with cancer but she had many months of wonderful remission with her family.
I personally will always miss her."

Thank you so very much for the cheque, Words cannot express how much it meant, that you gave so much of your time and effort to be of assistance. Your kindness will always be remembered. I have donated of that cheque to the S.P.C.A. in Edmonton in the memory of a very dear friend, who passed away in December. She was actually the one who went to the S.P.C.A. to rescue Sparky. The person who was supposed to take me to the S.P.C.A backed out. If he wasn't picked up by the next day, they were going to put him down. I had to work, so she stepped in. At the S.P.C.A they said he was not litter trained, but the first thing he did was use the litter box. He was such a good boy. Thank you again so very much Bridgette

Spudsie
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Diagnosed with: CARTOID BODY TUMOR
Age: 8
In January 2004 Spudsie became the first case that ACTSS subsidized for radiation therapy. Radiation therapy requires the pet to travel to a specialized oncology centre that possesses an expensive radiation machine housed in a thick concrete vault for safety. The pet receives radiation on a daily basis (Monday to Friday) for usually three to four weeks.
Spudsie, an eight year old Springer Spaniel, had a carotid body tumor on his neck that surgery alone would never be able control. Spudsie and his owner traveled to Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to receive his radiation. He did very well. The Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada now has an oncology center with a radiation machine donated by ACTSS. In July 2004 an Albertan veterinarian who has been training in oncology at Ft Collins for the past 2 years will return to Saskatoon to run the oncology program and Western Canadian pets will be able to receive their radiation therapies closer to home.
Spudsie's owner Joan, decided to stay with Spudsie during his 4 week stay at Ft Collins, Colorado, which no doubt increased Spudsie's comfort with the whole experience. "Pets are a lifetime commitment-I owe it to Spudsie to ensure he has the longest, happiest, most comfortable life possible. Were he capable, he would do the same for me."

Stella
Breed: Golden Retriever
Diagnosed with: MELANOMA
Age: 12
Stella has been diagnosed with Melanoma, a commonly fatal cancer of the skin. Recent research in veterinary medicine has created the Melanoma Vaccine, developed by veterinary oncologist, Dr. Phil Bergman. The vaccine attacks the melanoma cancer cells, thus killing the cancer. Pets receive four vaccinations in a row, 2 weeks apart and then go on to have boosters every 6 months. The prognosis greatly improves with this vaccination program.
"We are thrilled with the help being provided by ACTSS for Stella's cancer treatments. That's a very generous amount and we are really appreciative in your efforts to help Stella. We're really hoping the treatments will work for her. Right now, she's experiencing a few of the side effects of the chemotherapy but overall, she's doing really well. She still has all her fur too :) We just found out her melanoma DNA vaccines have arrived, so next Wednesday she'll start that route. It would be fine if the cheque were made out to Western Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Centre for her upcoming treatments. She'll be starting her vaccines next week and she'll be receiving 4 vaccines, once every 2 weeks for the next little while, along with all the other necessary procedures. So, the $2000 will help immensely with all of those expenses.
My daughter and I would like to give a big heartfelt thanks to you and all of ACTSS members for making a difference in our (especially Stella's) lives."

Suke
Breed: Rabbit
Diagnosed with: FIBROSARCOMA
Age: Adult
I have loved animals for as long as I can remember, but I never realized how my life would change the day I met Suke. Sally as she was originally called was brought to the Humane Society in terrible condition; badly matted, no training and scared of everyone and everything. It took her almost a year to trust me completely, but adopting her has been one of the best decisions of my life. Now, almost 2 and a half years later, Suke runs the household. She sleeps in my bed, begs for food and is full of love and affection. Not a day goes by that she doesn't make me laugh or love her even more. October 1, 2010 I found a lump on her right front leg. After surgery revealed that she had a fibre sarcoma, our next stop was the oncology centre. I don't know what the long term future holds for Suke, but I do know that thanks to help from ACTSS, Suke and I have more time together that she wouldn't have had without radiation treatment.

Tali

Diagnosed with: MALIGNANT MELANOMA
Age: 6
Tali had surgery to remove a malignant melanoma from her toe and then had 3 melanoma vaccines to spread the spread of this cancer throughout her body.
"Our dog, Tali is a great dog and much loved by all of our family. I have three children who range in age from 9-16 and Tali has been a very important part of their childhood. Our youngest doesn't even remember a time when Tali wasn't around. They all love to play with her and they don't even complain when it's time to walk her - that is indeed a rare thing for teenagers! Our eldest daughter even picked out a halloween costume for Tali and paraded her around the neighborhood. Our dog has also been a great comfort to my wife who has struggled with health concerns over the past five years. Tali always seems to know when my wife is not feeling well and will stay by her side all day. It is because of this loyalty that my wife said to do whatever it took to save her when we found out about Tali's cancer. Tali is so much more than a dog, she is a member of our family and we love her very much!"

Tiny
Breed: Rottweiler
Diagnosed with: OSTEOSARCOMA
Age: 9
Tiny was only 8 years old when she was diagnosed with the malignant bone tumour called osteosarcoma, a cancer that Rottweilers are so prone to developing. Tiny had an amazing family who loved her dearly and so when they learned about her cancer, they immediately made sure that everything was done to help her out. Tiny had a hind leg amputation to remove the cancer and then she underwent chemotherapy. Tiny did very well for many months, but then unfortunately lost her battle. She will be deeply missed.
"On March 25, 2001 Tiny came to join our lives. Many happy times, taking her where we went, she enjoyed car rides, the numerous walks, and game of tug-a-war. She gave us endless love and affection as she was a real thinking companion. Sadly we discovered she had bone cancer in May 2008. We are very grateful for the medical help she received to extend her life as long as possible without her having any major discomfort. Unfortunately her kidneys failed, and we were very lucky to bring her home to spend her last hours with us"

Trigger
Breed: German Shepherd cross
Diagnosed with: LYMPHOMA
Age: 13
Trigger is 13 yr old German Shepherd/Norweign Elkhund mix who was diagnosed with lymphoma in Feb. 2006. The news was devasting and I felt shattered. After meeting with the oncology team at Western Veterinary Clinic, the decision was made to start treatments. He went into remission immediately and did so with the second and third protocols as well. Each remission lasted longer than the first. Unfortunately, the cancer came back in January 2010 and he is, once again, in remission. It took longer for the remission this time, but he is happy going for walks, chasing wildlife and being spoiled. Not only is he a "favourite" in Calgary, he is a "favourite" with his other "team" in Red Deer. It is a decision that has given all of the other pets (3 other dogs and 5 cats), me, and of course, Trigger so much more quality time together and one that holds no regrets. No matter how much time he has, each day is a blessing, treasured and lived to the fullest. There are not enough words to thank all who have been instrumental in his well being both financially(ACTSS) and medically.

Van Gogh
Breed: Cat
Diagnosed with: AURAL ADENOCARCINOMA
Van Gogh is a member of my family who is loved and cherished. He joined my family January 30, 1997 as a stray with frozen ears and tail. Vany has the gentlest of dispositions. He is extremely affectionate - always looking to five hugs and kisses. He talks constantly as he walks around the house or if myself or one of the other 'kids' walk by where he is resting.
This summer Van Gogh was diagnosed with cancer in his right ear. It is an operable cancer with a high success rate of full recovery with removal of his inner ear. There was no question in my mind that he had to have the operation. Without it he would have faced a lot of pain and eventually euthanasia.
Financing the operation was going to be a problem, then I learned of the Veterinary Cancer Institute sponsorship program which offers financial assistance for pet cancer operations. After going through the application procedures to receive assistance Van and I were accepted for funding. I thank the individuals of the Veterinary Cancer Institute and the Spruce Grove Veterinary Clinic for helping Van and myself. "It's making a difference for us!"

It will be two years in May that ACTSS subsidized the surgery for Zeus, and yes he recovered fully and is doing great. Without the surgery he would not be here today. I am enclosing some pictures of Zeus for your photo album so other pet owners, the volunteers and the people and businesses who donate to your charity can see for themselves what a great job is being done.
Thanks again for everything,
